Business School In Three Steps - Step 3 of 3

Once you have your strategy established, you are ready to begin writing. I strongly encourage you to prepare an outline of the equivalent of "speaking points" for your recommenders.

STEP 3: Writing Process

Let them know what your overall strategy is (e.g. "I want to convey that I am analytical with good client management skills and strong work ethic). In addition, make sure that they understand the 3 points that you would like for them to address specifically. It is always helpful to provide examples from your experience that can be used to illustrate each point.

As for your essays, three pieces of advice.

  1. If the essay is word number constrained, write out all of your points first without regard to length until you determine the key nuggets of your story. Then reduce and refine until you are within the word limit.
  2. Have business school current students or alums review drafts of your work. They can often help you tighten your story to be most relevant to the school you are applying to.
  3. Make sure that each essay refers back to how the particular school will help you continue to grow or develop in some manner due to particular resources that the school has.
  4. Finally, painful though it is, if you haven't written 20-25 drafts, you haven't edited your essay enough.

Business school applications are a trying process. It is compounded by that fact that you are also holding down a full time job which most likely takes up much of your free time. However, the result of a successful application is an enjoyable two years in which you will network, learn and explore the many possibilities for your future career path.
